The trail area consists of 36 000 hectares of wilderness on the southern side of the Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Once you’ve been on trail you will want to return time and time again for this exclusive experience. There are various guided wilderness trails in Hluhluwe Imfolozi National Park.

Wilderness Trail in South Africa – Trip General Times
Day 1
General Times:
09:30 Depart from Richards Bay
11:00 Check-in for the trail at Mpila Camp – Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
12:00 Briefing and safety talk before the Wilderness Trail starts
15:00 We arrive at the satellite camp. Coffee/tea/fresh bush bread
15:30 Get familiar with the do’s and don’ts of camp
16:30 Shower hour
18:00 Supper around the fire – spaghetti and mince or rice and chicken or beef with beetroot or green salad
21:00 Time for a nice sleep in your personal tent
Tour Details:
At 12:00 we are met by the trails staff and receive a trails briefing at the Mdindini Camp. We pack our backpacks and our adventure starts on foot in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. We carry our own backpacks and walk approximately 7km to the satellite camp. We have two shallow river crossings during the walk.
We are greeted with the fresh smell of bush bread when we arrive at camp. As we sit around the crackling fire we can hear the sounds of the bush, hyenas hooping and lions roaring.
Day 2
General Times:
07:00 Breakfast – coffee, rusks, cereals, yogurt, egg, bacon, beans and tomatoes
08:00 Trail walk
12:00 Bush Lunch – bread, cheese, tomato, cucumber and juice
15:00 We arrive back at camp – Coffee/tea/fresh bush bread
16:30 Shower hour
18:00 Supper around the fire – spaghetti and mince or rice and chicken or beef with beetroot or green salad
21:00 Time for a nice sleep in your personal tent
Tour Details:
After breakfast we set out into the wilderness area to hike an approximate distance of about 15kms. We explore the beauty of the wilderness and learn more about the mighty Shaka and the Zulu culture. After a long day of walking, an open air shower is more than welcomed, supper under the stars and relaxation.
Day 3
General Times:
07:00 Breakfast – coffee, rusks, cereals, yogurt, egg, bacon, beans and tomatoes
08:00 We make our way back to Mdindini Camp
10:00 End of Trail
10:30 Depart back to Richards Bay
Tour Details:
At 08:00 we make Breakfast and the packing of our “donkey bags” so we can walk back only with our personal items. We will walk approximately 10kms, have two shallow river crossings again, when we arrive at base camp it’s time for lunch. We get our backpacks, bid farewell to our rangers and make our way back to Richards Bay.ake our way back to Mdindini Camp
Wilderness Trail in South Africa Includes:
All trails require a minimum number of four participants to be booked on the trail in order for the trail to go out as scheduled. If only two Under African Skies clients book, another two trailists that have independently booked can join our group. The accommodation is on a sharing basis. A reasonable level of fitness is required.
