Spring in Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
Published On: September, 2021
Is Spring good for game viewing in Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve? Recently, I have been asked this question many times. So, I wanted to find the answer for myself. On the first Saturday of spring, we arrived at Imfolozi National Park at dawn so that we can enjoy the park to the fullest. And to see what the start of this season was bringing to the Big 5 national park. After what I felt was a long winter, finally, it’s SPRING again. The 1st of September is the start of springtime in the southern hemisphere. And I am all smiles again with the warmer weather and longer days. Spring is definitely a time to enjoy the outdoors.
Game viewing in Hluhluwe Game Park is still good during springtime. Spring forms part of the dry season here. As very little rainfall is still experienced during these months. However, occasional showers can be experienced from time to time.
Three reasons for good game viewing in spring:
- The vegetation is still thinned out making it easier to spot animals.
- Temperatures are usually mild with clear skies.
- With the mild temperatures, game drives can be longer.
In short, the spring months are low season in South Africa which is ideal for those who can travel outside of the high season.
This time of year will not only give you an opportunity to experience the game reserve with fewer people game viewing. But you are also able to immerse yourself in silence and exclusivity of the area. Visiting Hluhluwe Game Reserve in low season is almost like having a one to one experience with this beautiful habitat.
So, on this first Saturday of Spring, we actually went chasing lions as the lion sightings during the week were amazing. There were cubs, with mums and aunts walking on the road. However, on our day out at Hluhluwe Game Park, we saw the herbivores of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, and buffalo). No cats for us today but nevertheless we weren’t disappointed at all. It was a typical beautiful spring day with a pleasant temperature and a tranquil ambiance. We enjoyed the flowers which are in bloom, the beautiful landscape which is starting to turn green and of course the animals that availed themselves to us. It was evident to see that spring has sprung in Hluhluwe Imfolozi National Park.
Why is spring one of my favourite seasons? My favourite part is that the sun starts to rise earlier and sets later making the days longer. The temperatures are pleasant and the ambiance of spring is LOVE. I love experiencing the awakening of Mother Nature from her winter slumber. This is when she best exudes her beauty. By displaying colourful flowers, the bees, butterflies, and all things beautiful. Even the air smells of spring.
Spring brings about renewed energy!
