Winter – Dry Season – May to September
Winter is the dry season with very little rainfall during these months. Occasional showers can be experienced from time to time. Temperatures are usually mild with clear skies. Vegetation thins out in the dry season allowing for good game viewing.
Summer- Start of the Wet Season – October to November
After winter’s dry conditions these months are the start of the wet season. The landscape in Hluhluwe Park transforms beautifully from brown to the different shades of green. This is the birthing season for mammals and an adorable time in the park. Newborns are spotted everywhere in the park.
Summer – Wet Season – December to April
These are the hottest months of the year in Zululand. Thunderstorms or passing showers can be expected during late afternoons. Humidity contributes to the high temperatures. Due to these high temperatures lions are sometimes seen resting in trees. This behaviour is to escape the heat and flies. Whilst on safari during this season a midday siesta and hydrating often is recommended.
Hluhluwe Accomodation
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park Accommodation
The main accommodation in the southern section (Imfolozi) is Mpila, this camp is strictly self-catering. A maximum of 100 guests can be accommodated at Mpila. In the Imfolozi section of the park, there are also private camps like Nselweni Bush Camp, Masinda Lodge, Gqoyeni Bush Lodge, and Hlatikulu Bush Lodge. Each camp is for private groups only and has 8 beds except for Nsweleni that has 20 beds.
Hluhluwe Accomodation
You have several options to choose from to spend the night in the Hluhluwe section. Hilltop camp is the main accommodation in the northern section of the park. This camp has self-catering and other options to choose from. A maximum of 190 guests can be accommodated at Hilltop. Private camps in Hluhluwe include Mthwazi Lodge, Muntulu Bush Lodge and Munyawaneni Bush Lodge. These camps are for private groups only and have 8 beds each.
Hluhluwe Animals – The Big 5
Lion
Lions in Hluhluwe Imfolozi sometimes climb trees, however this is not a common sighting. Lions have a stealthy built, compact bodies and powerful forelegs.

Rhino
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is well known for its white rhino conservation efforts. The white rhino is also known as the square-lipped rhino.

Elephant
African Elephants are regularly seen in Hluhluwe Imfolozi. It is the world’s largest land mammal. They have large trunks that are used to breathe, drink, eat, smell, snorkel, communicate, used as a ‘hand’ to touch, feel, hold, grab, pull, and many other uses.

Leopard
Leopards are a rare sighting in Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve as they are very elusive cats. They are golden with distinctive dark spots that are called rosettes. Leopards are excellent tree climbers and are very strong and agile animals.

Buffalo
Hluhluwe Imfolozi has huge herds of buffalo. They have huge bodies covered with black hair and massive horns that meet in the middle to form a “helmet”. When a buffalo herd comes under threat from a predator they form a circle around their young and weak.
